South West Touch League Launched!

O2 funded touch clubs in Devon and Cornwall have worked together to launch the South West Touch Rugby league. The league is a new initiative put together by Craig Walker (Plymouth), Lee Missions (Truro) and James Webber (Exeter).

The leagues aim is to provide a monthly tournament fixture within Devon and Cornwall which can be used to develop Touch Rugby within the region. Each month one club will host a tournament of local teams. Standings in each tournament will result in clubs being awarded points towards a seasonal league format. Teams and referees are sourced from within the region to help generate a strong and sustainable playing base. The format follows the FIT standard rules so that play can work towards developing competitive teams for national events in the future.

The league is currently in its trial stages over Summer 2016. After an initial review it’s hoped that the format can be expanded to allow more teams to enter.

The first event took place in Plymouth and saw teams from Exeter, Plymouth, Truro and Saltash compete in a round robin group stage and knockout finals. Exeter Touch Rugby proved to be the overall winners of Round One after victory over Saltash in the final.

The next round is hosted by Plymouth on the 30th July, followed by Truro on 20th August.

For more information on playing or to enquire about entering a team in the league please contact James Webber. New faces are always encouraged - no experience necessary!
